Why Study IMYP History?

The International Middle Years Programme © History encompasses experimentation and observation, critical thinking, reasoning and discussion, the use of primary and secondary sources all of which can be used to develop an understanding of human society and our place in the world; students begin to explore their knowledge and understanding by assessing validity, reliability, credibility, certainty and the individual, as well as cultural perspectives, aimed at developing an verifiable knowledge and understanding about human existence and behaviour.

The course focuses on the development of critical and creative thinking skills that students can apply in a wide variety of areas of interest and careers. The knowledge, skills and attitudes that students develop in this course provide a meaningful foundation for further study and helps prepare students for academia, and the world of work.

A course leading to this examination should:
(i) inspire a love of history;
(ii) stimulate candidates’ curiosity about the way of life of people living in the past;
(iii) develop candidates’ understanding of their own and others’ inheritance;

(iv) enable candidates to consider the ways in which the past influences the present;
(v) treat both the learning of facts and the acquiring of skills as vital, linked components of the subject;
(vi) encourage the use of source material in the general teaching of the subject.

Structure of the Course:

Every Week you are provided with Learning Objectives – which tell you what you need to know and be able to do; and Success Criteria – which describe the PROOF that you have achieved your Learning Objectives. Each week, you are provided with interesting tasks and assessments designed to meet these Success Criteria.

• This course is designed over 4 x 10 week terms.
• Each week consists of 2 lessons (2 teaching lessons of 1 hour and one Assessment for Learning opportunity of 45 mins)
• There is 1 SUBMISSION requirement each week.
• Formative examinations are held at half term (Week 5)
• Summative examinations are held at the end of every term (Week 10).
